A Fish Story…The History of Stuart’s Seafood Market

Follow the Fish

“Follow the fish to Stuart’s and you’ll get the catch of the day.” That’s how Stuart’s Seafood Market began. In the spring of 1955 Stuart Vorpahl, Sr. and his sons Billy and Stuart Jr. built a packing station to send their shipments to the Fulton Fish Market. Locals and tourists alike began following the fleet of pickup trucks towing their boats to the booming enterprise. The demand was so great they just had to open their doors to the public, establishing the oldest continuously operated seafood market on the East End.

The tradition continues today under the stewardship of proprietors Charlotte Klein Sasso and Bruce Sasso- now into their second successful decade at Stuart's. The Sassos bring a wealth of experience to Stuart’s. Charlotte formerly managed the renowned Gosman’s Fish Market in Montauk. Bruce has owned Sasso Seafoods, a wholesale distributorship for the past twenty five years and continues on as the primary purveyor for such acclaimed restaurants as the Lobster Roll, the Palm and Bostwick’s.

Catch of the Day

Stuart’s Seafood Market sells the finest local catch including flounder, fluke, bluefish, tuna, swordfish and striped bass. East End baymen harvest our shellfish daily from clean, state-certified waters. You can also find such favorites as salmon, red snapper and premium quality shrimp. Our tanks are filled with lively lobsters of all sizes, but we specialize in the mighty jumbo lobster from the cold, clear waters of Nova Scotia. We will cook your lobsters to order in our state-of-the-art convection steamer which best captures all their natural, sweet flavor. For an old-fashioned seaside treat, try a Clambake To Go, a ready-to-heat pot layered with lobsters, steamers, mussels, potatoes and corn on the cob. Need instant gratification? Order a Lobster Dinner To Go, complete with melted butter, served hot and ready to enjoy.
